William Drew dies on the battlefield. His wife, Mona Shaw, struggles to raise their son, Phil Drew, alone. When Phil learns he has leukemia, he doesn’t want to burden Mona and secretly calls the phone number of William’s former comrade from an old photograph. Before he can speak, he collapses, triggering a desperate search. As Mona takes him to the city for treatment, the mother and son face suspicion, humiliation, and false accusations from strangers.
